I caught some of these today, 4/19/20. Ocotillo, CA. Only about 9mm. P. Californicus?
Are they polygyne?
Semi claustral, I'm sure.

Pogonomyrmex californicus I’m almost positive.
They are polygonous at first but then once the colony gets its first few workers there will only be 1 queen left.

Yes, this is californicus, somewhat bicolor desert variey. I'm amazed they flew this early!

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I have 9. Is it better odds to pair some up or keep them individual?

It depends on if you want more colonies or if you want to have some take off faster at the beginning.
What was the temperature when you went? I am so jealous!

I really just want one or two successful colonies for myself. Anything else I would probably give away or sell. I'm one and zero with Pogonomyrmex so far and they're my first goal species since getting in this hobby.
Thank you for the help.

No problem! What were the conditions because I was thinking about going to the desert but I know it’s pretty chilly over there.

They might be polgynous. But, they will probably end up fighting. It is up to you. With combining a few queens, you get more nanitics, but a potential for killing of workers, and rarely all queens later on, as well as less separate colonies. So, I personally would combine two trios and leave 3 separate queens. Then you can sell off the ones you don't want when they all get colonies so you can see which is the best one.

It was low 80s today. I found them mid day with shallow founding chambers only a couple inches deep. Lots of dead and still flying males. Most near a tree.
I'm guessing they flew yesterday. The area had been low 80's for 4 days with rain about a week ago.
