My camponotus clarithrox laid its first egg yesterday after 6 months. Does anyone have experience with them? If so share advice and pictures. Its my first queen and I don't want it to die.

That is a long time. When one of my camponotus laid eggs after 6 months, it died right away. Feeding in a test tube is not that bad. The ants usually freeze up and you can get the food in there before they begin moving again. the queen will not need to begin feeding unless she is that old. You might want to put a little drop of honey to see if you can get her going again.

Are you sure its her first egg in 6 months? Maybe she's been eating her previous brood.

I still think this is C. yogi. I would just treat her like any Camponotus, nothing special.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Huh. Nurbs said clarithorax. Also what is "nothing special" because I have no experience and why did it take her so long to lay an egg? Thanks :)

Just check on her once a week at most.

Some queens just are infertile or made of inferior genes then the rest, you never know. all ant keepers have had those dud queens.

Oh, if nurbs said clarithorax, that's probably what it is. I guess I'm wrong. I had no idea how truncated their faces were.

Nothing special= Leave her alone in a plain test tube for a week, and hope she lays. Then check on her every week or so.

Don't the infertile ones die? Also should I try feeding her to get her going? Thanks for advice so far.

I caught her in October so maybe she was just waiting for spring. Do ants in the San Diego area hibernate?

Infertile queens can live for awhile. It depends on the species and the environment.

Is their anyway to tell if it's infertile?

There is no way to tell for sure whether a queen has mated or not, but here are some signs that infertile queens often (but not always and aren’t completely reliable) display:

-Eggs are scattered throughout the tube
-the queen is not caring for the eggs
-the queen looks extra skinny

As previously mentioned, these signs are not completely reliable, and don’t make up your mind either way until the queen either dies or gets workers.

"God made..... all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds (including ants). And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:25 NIV version
