Welcome to my very first journal on my multi-queen Solenopsis molesta AKA The Furries!
2-3 weeks ago I caught 12 Solenopsis molesta queens. 2 of them had black gastors which apparently means they had a fungal infection. So I let them go(I killed them). I put all the remaining queens together. I expect them to kill 1-3 queens when nanitics come(some are probably bad or unfertilized). Now they have a ton of eggs and larvae pupae. Hopefully they will get nanitics before I have to hibernate them :D.
 
SO, about what you can expect from here. I check on my ants every Saturday so there will probably be updates every 1-2 weeks until nanitics. After workers I will update the journal when anything interesting happens or when I get good photos of them. Recently, I got a pretty good macro lens so I will be taking as many pictures as I can. Feel free to leave any comments or tell me if I'm doing something wrong.

Ants I have: Tapinoma sessile(2 queen colony). RED MORPH Camponotus neacticus(now has pupae!), Tetramorium immigrans (x3), Aphaenogaster sp, Temnothorax sp, Brachymyrmex sp.   possibly infertile   :(,  Ponera pennsylvanica, and Pheidole morrisi!  :yahoo: 

 

Other insects: Polistes sp. Queen

                    

Ants I need: Pheidole sp., Trachymyrmex sp., Crematogaster cerasi , Dorymyrmex sp. Most wanted: Pheidole morrisii

I have great news!
My Solenopsis molesta...

Has pupae!
And none of the queen are dead(yet) XD
Now They should hopefully have nanitics in a week or 2. They're gonna be so small.

Something GREAT had happened with my 10 Solenopsis molesta queens...

 

 

 

THEY HAVE NANITICS!!!

 

As far as I can tell there are still a lot of pupae. So I will make an update when more eclose. I can see 2 or 3 nanitics. Unfortunately, they don't look very good with my macro-lens as they are super small(less than a millimeter). I plan on moving them into a Mini Hearth once they start to fill up the test tube or it runs out of water. Additionally, I will not be hibernating this colony and will hopefully get a heating cable around late December(Christmas). I also expect 2-3 queens to be culled for under-producing or being unfertilized.

So far things are going well. I've fed them a few mealworms and their worker count is slowly growing. I have trouble counting to workers because of how easy it is for them to hide under the queens. I estimate that they are between 5 to workers. These are older pictures, but after these were taken I fed them a piece of peanut. Whenever I check on them I see a queen on the peanut so I'm pretty sure they are eating it. I will post more pictures of them as soon as possible. I might even post some videos if I have the time.

I had a colony like this but they didn’t do well I probably had about 50 carolonesis queens in a dirt set up and they probably had around 1000 eggs I’m not even trying to trick you or anything, their eggs were so small but they had a pile of eggs bigger h the an like 10 of them combined.

i was going to get a colony of these guys this year, but they flew at a weird time, and i was not able to find them. hopefully next year!

Okay, any name ideas then?
A good name would be something that you notice the queen is doing or her personality, finicky, calm, or a little to over relaxed. Like that one I had... But a good name would also be what they are called aka thief’s. A Latin, Greek, or some other name translated into that.

I think "Thieves" would be appropriate, if highly unoriginal.


Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
