"God made..... all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds (including ants). And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:25 NIV version
Keeping:
Formica cf. pallidefulva, cf. incerta, cf. argentea
Formica cf. aserva, cf. subintegra
Myrmica sp.
Lasius neoniger, brevicornis
Where do these ants nest? The only Dorymyrmex grandulus I have seen, like most Dorymyrmex species, build small, pyramid-like mounds in relatively sandy soil. I have actually caught a few D. grandulus queens as well, and they are considerably larger than Tapinoma sessile queens. Additionally, there is by all means morphological variation in T. sessile, as their range extends throughout the continent.
I think there are more likely Tapinoma sessile.

They're nesting in cracks near my door/foundation. I guess that seems more like a Tapinoma-like locale, but the queens still look nothing like them.

Tried to get a few more photos:

Worker is Tapinoma for sure. Dorymyrmex are way thinner than that.
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
Lately I have been attempting to capture a part of this colony by enticing them to set up a satellite nest. I gave them a test tube, and it's becoming a popular water source. I've never seen this many ants from this colony in one place before (it's not too large of a colony, I would guess a couple hundred workers). I'm hoping they will eventually move perhaps a couple dozen workers, brood, and a queen or two in. I'm also keeping it wrapped up in a tissue to keep it nice and dark.

I once had a mature colony infesting my garage. Their foragers were everywhere.
