Molesta are flying. I would recommend blacklighting.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I see fire ant queens. Do I catch them or wait and see if they mate?

They all have wings

Probably, but they won't fly there until rainfall.

recent rain (maybe 1-2 days but depends), high temp (80s and 90s), lower wind speeds, high humidity, time depends on species Tetra in the morning, Camponotus at sunset, and idk with other species.

I don't know about honey pots, you would have to ask someone down near you. I believe there are some specific desert spots for Myrmecocystus sp.

New member looking to start my first colony so I'll be watching this thread for updates. While I'd rather start on some easier species, I'd take anything that'll help me get experience. If anyone in the San diego area has a queen they don't want I'd be willing to take it. Otherwise I'll be hitting trails periodically.

I took my dogs along the PQ canyon trail, and didn't spot anything, I wasn't really expecting to, but was hoping the weekend temp spike might make something appear

My son and I went hiking June 4 on Grasslands Loop in Mission Trails.  The trails were swarming with ants.  So much that my son was freaked out from his previous exposure to fire ants when camping two years ago.  This inspired us to try and get into ant keeping to learn more.  However as we return to the same area in July there is not an ant to be found.  Curious as to what may have been going on in early June?  I don't think there was any major weather conditions at that time.

Fire ants are far less picky about when they fly than most other ants.
