Daley Ranch, Escondido, CA.

Double Peak Park, San Marcos, CA.

Heller's Bend Preserve Trail, Fallbrook, CA.

Elfin Forest, San Marcos, CA.

Cleveland National Forest, CA.

Pamo Valley, Ramona, CA.

Palomar Mountain, CA.

Hellhole Canyon Preserve, Valley Center, CA.

 

Generally, you'll find Pogomyrmex californicus, Veromessor, Black Garden ant, Argentine ant, Solenopsis xyloni, and Crematogaster.

I found a fertile Dorymrymex Insanus queen about a week ago, already laying her eggs now.

Once in a while you'll find Myrmeccocystus scattered through out San Diego county.

19 x Pogonomyrmex subnitidus (Seed-harvester ant) colonies + 3 x Pogonomyrmex (ID uncertain) colonies

16 x Linepithema humile (Argentine ant) colonies.

1 x Unknown Formicidae colony.

1 x Tapinoma sessile (Odorous house ant) colony.

1 x Camponotus fragilis (Carpenter/wood ant) colony + 1 x Camponotus sansabeanus (Carpenter/wood ant) colony.

1 x Solenopsis molesta (Thief ant) colony.

Black Garden ant.

If you mean Lasius niger, I don’t believe they exist or are very prevalent in California. Is there some other ‘Black Garden Ant’ I am not aware of?

I didn't mean anything in particular, just larger species that are easier to contain. Also are there any good anting spots further south than those posted above.

Look anywhere. There are spots that are very reliable, but ants pop up everywhere. just always be prepared for a queen, or even a small colony

Just take a walk around local parks or woods. Ants do not fly 24/7, so just go out when there is a high chance of flights. Or get a light trap.

Try this Friday and Saturday in San Diego county area for queen hunting. 2 dry days after the nonstop 2 week rain we've been getting seems promising.
