I want to get some sort of grout/ytong/acrylic formicarium for my chromaiodes colony and I can't find any good places to find them, I found a website called utahantshop and they have relatively decent prices but I can't find much info on them either. Where does everyone else buy their formicariums from?

THA makes the best formicaria, most people would agree

THA has great quality but the price tag is a little high for me. I also just made a purchase from Ant-Shack and they seem promising so far, but I haven't been using them long enough to come to a thorough decision. Overall, I've started transitioning to making my own setups.

Interesting. Da mentioned he bought a formicarium from Utah Ant Shop. Never heard of it, but its products look nice and prices reasonable. Their Pogonomyrmex are also half the price of THA.

Tar heel ants definitely has the best formicariums, and probably the only formicariums that your colony could safely live in, as chromaiodes are notoriously destructive ants.

I'd say the best are home-made. Certainly the most satisfying, when you make a formicarium, and watch the colony thrive. If you are not in a position to do that though, I'd recommend THA.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

THA all the way. I never buy anything else. I only trust THA and my own grout nests.

I've experimented with a bunch of more budget formicaria and I will say THA colonies are doing the best and the construction/materials are superior.

(I do have some ants doing reasonably well in tubes in outworlds, too.)

I wish that i could also get THA, however, that is also out of my budget. I also don't seem to like AntsCanada, so i am experimenting around with making my own.

I have two big colonies of C. chromiaodes and they are in Ants Canada Hybrid 2.0 Nests. One will be moved though to a custom built Tar Heels formicarium soon. I have a C. castaneus colony in a THA formicarium and they absolutely thrive in it!!

People say they are pricey but they are absolutely worth it. In my forst year I tried all kind from high end to low end and THA always performed the best! Only thing I prefer is to have a larger outworld than they offer. But the small outworlds are great for feeding.

Currently keeping:

Camponotus chromaiodes

Camponotus castaneus

Formica subsericea
