You have to try pretty hard to screw things up with a Tetramorium queen. Just leave her in peace for a month, and you’ll be off to the races.

Tetramorium colonies when they start getting large eat so much food. I don't even know if it's possible for my two year old colony to be full and content in their nest...

Sounds like an 'easy' species which is a relief.  :D  We will check on her again in a month.

Don't worry. Put a little mealworm segment in there and they'll chomp down.

Or a whole mealworm.........  It'll last them a few more days, but they'll eat all of it sooner or later.

Hi everyone,

Do tetramorium queens need to be fed while they are laying?  We want to be sure we don't screw this up.

no they are fully claustral meaning they don't need food until the first workers arrive. should take ~ 1 month from egg to worker in my experience.

(sorry for the redundant info; didn't see the above replies)

I think that could end up being the case with mine.

They’re eating, but they won’t explore even their test tube. There’s around 7 nanitics now, with more on the way.

I boosted my queen with callows and pupae from a mature colony.

My queen laid eggs since this.
They started out with 50-75 callows and pupae, and now have close to 150 workers, and 50ish more on the way. Many of the workers are the queen’s biological offspring. I also moved them into an AC Tetramorium nest, as I figured they’d be the only species around here that would actually appreciate and fit in one of his nests.

How do they seem to fill out that nest with only 150 workers?  Think that's what I will end up with for my Tetra's once they outgrow their mini hearth.

Currently keeping Tetramorium Immigrans and Camponotus Pennsylvanicus in THA mini hearths.  I also have a couple Prenolepis Imparus queens in test tubes.

My fifth tetra queen now has workers, and Queen 1 has sadly died after losing all workers.

My second year tetra colony is eating a scary amount… with a very large pile of brood. Wondering how large they'll get by Winter. :D
