so i saw an instagram user who made these really beautiful nests, but in the nests i saw no way of hydrating. as i find out more and more people have wooden nests, i wonder, how do they hydrate the nests? Cause the wood would rot fast, right? this is for people if thye have wood nests to tell me how it works ahaha

I'm a Camponotus keeper so it's kind of in my ant keeping description to have a general idea of a wood/ cork nest. An ways, there's typically a hydration port or area where you can use a syringe to water the nest, making the nest partially wet. As you said the wood will rot, so there isn't permanent housing capabilities of this type of nest, so yeah. Anything else you have questions about?

You could insert water absorbent material such as a sponge or Ytong/Firebrick into a certain part of the nest, and hydrate it from there.

I also believe the wood would rot if you got it to moist. Also, if you have camponotus...

If it rots, that's a problem for us. But the ants will like it.  I'd use some sort of exterior (Plastic or another material) to seal the nest and prevent escapes.

 

 

Camponotus don't need tons of moisture, but they do need it.   A little "well" of sorts with some sort of sponge could help create a humidity gradient.
