Hello and good morning from Cardiff s.wales, I thought of take a few minutes to introduce myself. My name is Steven (with a v) Morgan and ihave a new found interest in ants! So finding this forum was a bit of a god send. Iv always been curious about ants and after watching a few vids on YouTube I decided to make a start at keeping them as pets. I bought a lasius niger queen, brood and workers via Ebay and also a lasius flavus queen, brood and eggs which arrived this morning. It's the best thing iv done for a while! Quite excited about watching them grow. ATB steve

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Welcome! You are very lucky to live in the UK, which means that you can legally import exotic ants!

Never knew i could like ants so much until i got onto formiculture! hopefully you too learn so much about ants,that you are a walking ant dictionary!!

Hya folks. On the exotic ant subject I did make a slightly 'tipsy' perchance last night. A messor barbarus queen with brood!thanks for the kind words. I'm thinking I may do a journal from a complete beginners perspective. Atb Steve

Welcome!! Good luck with your new ants!! I just began last year myself. One pitfall to try and avoid (and its really tough) is don't get in over your head. It's way too easy to want ALL the ants. Keep it modest and you'll be super successful. I still have to fight myself on this constantly especially with all the people here and their pictures!!  :lol:

Morning all. Il keep that in mind mate! Shouldn't of bought them really. Theyl be well looked after, I seem to have plenty of time on my hand these days. Like nickanter said we just call them barbel, but their called European barbel I think. Barbus barbus
