Make sure the Camponotus get plenty of humidity. They like their nest pretty moist.

Just watered them now. Would you recommend once a week or twice a week?

STAR ANTS will now be a monthly special. I don’t have enough ideas to post one every week.

If you mean queen Crassica, most of that’s not honey.

I know. I just thought you might have thought the physogastric queen was filled with honey, and she wasn't.

Camponotus actually have low humidity requirements compared to others.

Well, he kept the colony before me, so I’m just trusting his knowledge of them.

That’s way too broad of a generality. Camponotus is one the most varied ant genus. Camponotus pennsylvanicus, at least here in SD, are only found in humid environments, and are one of the more humid loving species in the area. Considering I made the nest and have kept this species for 5 years, they are definitely going to want to be watered twice a week.

Ever wonder why they like nesting in moist, rotten wood?

UPDATE #003
Saturday, February 29th, 2020
Update 1 of Page 2

Camponotus pennsylvanicus
The NOCT IMPERIUM

Tragedy!!! On Wednesday, when I was watering their nest, I was overcome with temptation to peek inside the nest after nearly two weeks of secrecy, curious to find out how many eggs the queen had laid. Yet to my utter surprise and horror, they all had mysteriously DIED?!!!!! :*( :*(  :/  They looked like they were going about their daily business, yet just frozen, and not curled up. I had to check twice to make sure they were actually dead. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT COULD POSSIBLY HAVE GONE WRONG!!! I watered them, gave them completely organic honey, and left them alone. Camponotus are truly exceptionally weird ants. So my most sincere apologies to you guys, especially Ants4Fun, who took the time to raise this promising colony, only to have it killed under my care. Again, I'm so sorry, but this colony will be discontinued from STAR ANTS. RIP :*(

Lasius neoniger
The LAI'SO REPUBLIC
First appearance update #001

On a more positive note, Crassica has been busy! She's not as fat as last week, but for a good reason! She laid about 20 eggs! :yahoo: And She's still pretty fat, just not as much. So she could have even more by next week.

svaoltr.jpg

Alata still has laid no eggs. Not sure if she's mated. Her gaster looks no larger than it did last week, either.

Formica subsericea
THE EQUAN ALLIANCE
First appearance update #002

Still no eggs, but the queen looks even fatter. :)

It's okay Adak, I was hurt when my Camponotus queen died too. I had to hold back tears all day because I had to go to my little cousin's birthday party that day, and no one wanted to see me cry because of my queen, they would say I was insane! But I released the colony back into the wild and let them live the rest of their lives how they wanted, and I'm sure they'll always be thankful for that final liberty I gave them. Just remember, she will always be in your heart, mind, and soul.
