Prenolepis chose a good day to fly. Today it’s 27, and feels like 15 with wind chill. We got snow last night.

Found another Prenolepis queen today! Also saw lots of active Formica colonies, along with a couple Lasius workers.

Awesome! I thought they might fly again, but only thought they flew once. I got more than enough queens, so I was fine staying in.

After another cold spell, it's finally warming up! A few colonies have also woken up as well.

Here's one of (if not the) largest Lasius neoniger colony on my property.

Aren't they SO CUUUUUUUUTE?!!!

A few weeks ago I captured a couple dozen workers to use as hosts in case I found a parasitic queen. Here's their nest entrance:

Another active colony was a Formica cf. montana colony. However, I really do recommend watching the video of their superhighway here: Formica montana - Album on Imgur

And they're not dead due to a fungus (oh wait, on another note, I have L. Neoniger in my backyard as well...why is my backyard so abundant with life? If I plant native I think I'll have ANTdrew's backyard variety beat...)

It got to 80 today, and I looked for parasitic Lasius. Didn't find any, but saw LOTS more Formica and Lasius, however.
