Hi All
I’m new to ant keeping and wanted to stop by and say hello. I just purchase my first formicarium from Tar Heel ants today and am excited to get started soon.
I am starting out with Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis and may be posting questions, pictures, etc.

Hello, Acshaw89! Welcome to Formiculture! I think you'll find this to be a helpful and comfortable environment, and I hope you enjoy your stay. Also, good luck with Pogonomyrmex occidentalis! I've personally never kept occidentalis, but I have kept badius. She died after only a few days, likely due to the sunflower seeds I fed her containing pesticides, but I hear occidentalis are fun! If you have any questions about them, I know Ant_Dude2908 has a successful founding colony going. The queen of his colony laid eggs a few weeks ago, and they're beginning to hatch.
Best of luck,

Welcome to the addictive hobby of ant keeping!I recommend reading the important topics first. If you have a question, try searching it first as well; chances are it’s been answered. And if you can’t find your answer, ask away. Feel free to start an ant journal to document your ant colony, and ask specific questions regarding them on that thread, so everyone can understand the background and context. Happy ant keeping!

Welcome to the forum!
About the P. occidentalis, make sure to give them lots of seeds, always have their humidity above 75% for ample brood development, and have their nest heated to 80-90 degrees. My colony has 10 eggs, 8 larvae and 2 pupae now, and all I'm feeding them is crushed chia seeds and the occasional wheatgrass seed. I find that they enjoy the chia more than the wheatgrass, though. I assume for the chia seeds' smaller size.
Good luck!
