Ant adoptions, come on, really?? This is not adoption, these are sales plain and simple so lets be honest call them sales not adoptions.

Human adoption agencies charge money, too.  Does anyone argue they are selling children?

I think people use the term "Ant Adoption" because "adoption" is commonly used to describe many different animals sold as pets.  No one is circumventing any law or restriction by advertising ants for "adoption." So what precisely is your concern?

With this logic, I guess you'd have to call dog and cat adoptions "sales" as well. "Ant adoption" only sounds weird because it's not commonly used.

I always wondered what the reasoning was behind this term. It certainly fits better for colonies reared from a single queen, not colonies unethically removed from the wild.

Adoption can be used properly for colonies that are not wanted and are being given away. Selling ants that you werent planning on keeping is just selling.

The term adoption in this usage became prevalent as a way around website restrictions on selling animals, however call it adoption and charge a small "adoption" fee  and you were good to go. These fees were usually about what  the retail cost of the product ie: animal would be. Admittedly as was mentioned no law is being broken, but these adoptions are pretty much simply an income (admittedly small) generating move so why not call it what it is, sales.

I don't care what you call it as long as I get the ants.

You must be really bored a lot of people have lots of colony’s and in time they end up with to many and need to rehome some .so asking for an adoption fee to cover your cost you’ve spent in time and materials to raise the colony is not out landish.every one could have went with out hearing this opinion of other people’s opinions.waste of a post .if you don’t like it you don’t have to participate in these “adoptions”

How would one go about legally adopting an ant? Can I?

Like, actually going through the adoption process. But for a hexapod that’s unusually socially savvy.

Calling it an "Adoption", if not a valid term, is purely a marketing tactic, and people fall for marketing tactics all the time. What's the difference?

Interesting speculation. Although in my opinion what you call it isn't that important, as long as the ants aren't mistreated. Perhaps people chose to call it that because it has more of a ring (again in my opinion) than (*member*'s ant colony merchandise for sale).

Honestly, I thought it was stupid too. And just kind of weird.
