Some people call a pillow a pellow why does it matter if you don’t like adopting ants then you can buy them.maybe the guy that started this thread should run for some political position and change the world one phrase at a time

Rather hostile...

I don’t read anything threatening or offensive about what I wrote.was just poking fun about the non situation-situation.this whole thread started because someone didn’t “like”what someone else was calling ants trading hands.that's harsh that what someone else calls or believes something to be can bother someone enough to make a post about.

Fixed.

I don't see the problem in calling it an "adoption". It simply sounds better than "garage sale" or "-username-' ants for sale".

Right... the term "adoption" is more appealing to customers. Again, it's a good marketing tool.

Reminds me of the sort of arguments from college days, when people were very particular about lots of things, including terminology, language evolution/corruption, etc.

Anyway I assume "adoption" is used mostly because of the alliteration. You know, the short "a" sound in English. Ant. Adoption. If it were "Salticidae" I assume "sales" would be more commonly used than "adoption." It's just nicer sounding in English. Though it appears "adoption" even has a wholly different meaning for bees ... generally in the form of sponsorships.

Makes sense to me, too. It’s semantics, but I’ll take the chance to get up on my soap box again: don’t call it adoption if you removed one of the tiny minority of established colonies (no matter how small) from the wild. That’s more like ant abduction.

garage sale

And like garage sales, the meaning doesn't have to be completely literal. We don't sell garages (usually), and don't always sell things inside the garage. We call ants pets, and we take them home and pay a fee. It's not exactly the same thing, but it's close enough to share the word.
