i saw a nest of what i think where these in idaho. they had a mound around a stump and another mound around a boulder. when i touched the nest the ants that came out where red on the head and thorax and only black on the gaster. Are these formica obscuripes? i thoght they where at the time

they might have been as they were releasing male alates at the time and i found what i know was a queen that looked like it might have come from that species later that day.

Also in idaho during a hunting trip i found an ant nest with pure black formica and then formica ants that looked like what you described.

Sometimes workers can have a small amount of red or orange on their thorax.
