Hey.

 

For all ye Aussie ant keepers that are interested in Leptomyrmex. It seems as though they are flying.

Just talked to a friend this morning, his property has spider ants on it and he told me he saw a winged queen on his car windshield. Probably was a drone but regardless, it means they are flying right now (or in the queens cases, walking).

 

This was in the far south coast (Bega valley).

leptomyrmex founding queens are supposedly almost never found. Hope you can break that record.

Maybe try a "trap" or "ant hotel" type approach, and make some boxes full of loose dirt with little holes for queens to find.

too much luck involved, and queens look not much different from workers :)

I see workers all the time near my house...

Yep, best way to tell them apart is their ocelli and that needs a geology/jewelers lens to see.

that's why i've got my fingers crossed. :D

I don't think leptomyrmex queena fly, I think they're ergatoid.

you can tell because they're naturally fat

they look like repletes yet aren't distended, easiest way I can think of
