That soil looks quite dry which leads me to believe it is not mold. I have seen whitening like this before when using water which is high in mineral content, the white is mineral deposit left behind due to evaporation.

I have 'hard' water which is high in calcium. Whenever I freeze it for ice cubes or it evaporates, it leaves a lot of white residue as well. It could be that.

Why am I alive
What's my purpose other than to suffer

Pessimistic nihilism? You must have the idea that even if there is no set meaning or purpose to your life, you then have the option, the duty, to create your own purpose.

Hightlyze all you need to do is either:

a] take a break from the forum

b] learn to calm down if you don't understand a concept; don't freak out.

Though 'b' is probably a good lesson for school :playboy: .

Another troll thread... We might as well stop responding at this point.

I disagree, no trolling here

Your dirt seems dry and possibly moldy. Your queen is in a test tube which means the dirt probably isn't necessary unless she requires substrate. You could remove, or add more of it so it doesn't dry out so quickly.

Ow, I wouldn't say that. I know people who already killed dozens of queens.
Its a hobby with ups and downs

ants dying is a natural part of this hobby. In my first two years of antkeeping, NONE of my ants survived hibernation, except for a few lucky camponotus. Your first losses will hurt, but eventually you'll get used to it and focus on the colonies that are alive.
