I moved them out of the moldy dirt box and replaced it with a small starter formicarium.

There is a important time for everything, important place for everyone, an important person for everybody, and an important ant for each and every ant keeper and myrmecologist alike

How do I know if the queen is still alive? there are a lot of workers and some cocoons but i havent seen eggs or larva in about 1 month. But there are still a lot of workers and they have tunneled well in their 10 or 20 gallon tank.

You just have to be patient. You will know if there continues to be a supply of brood in the colony, and if more workers are being produced.
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
I'm acually having a lot of hope for this colony because it seems like they have been growing very fast! And I saw a bunch of larva and cocoons yesterday. No eggs have been seen but they are probably at the very bottom of this tank they are in.

This colony still hasen't grown. I give them a lot of food and they are on top of a heat mat. I see the occasional cocoon but I haven't seen larva in a very long time.

This whole journal has been very "Formica style" of growth.

That gives me a bit more hope.
This colony is definitely growing. They are eating more than normal and they are increasing in population.

Bummer. I found the queens remains in the dead pile, and they died out extremely quickly. This normally happens in the winter. I loose the colonies that aren't fit enough. They barely made it past the last winter.
