Formica perpilosa fits in almost all manners, in size, coloration, physical aspects and nesting behavior. I am about 95% sure, but until I am fully sure, I am not marking it solved.

Going to try to get some good microscope pictures. I got another specimen today. Luckily the nests are only about 1.5 miles away from our house.

When I first got interested in ants, I was curious to see how many interesting species I could close to where I lived. At the time I lived in Costa Mesa, so I looked all over OC urban and suburban areas west of Jamboree and Portola Parkway (in other words nowhere near any wilderness), in the most likely places (parks and any small undisturbed pieces of land). I even checked some spots in Huntington Beach, but never found much more than Argentine Ants, Dorymyrmex insanus, Pogonomyrmex californicus, and Solenopsis xyloni. I did find some Formica francoeuri Can you PM me the exact location of these Formica nests, I might want to check them out sometime if I'm in the area. I grew up in HB, and lived there for 23 years.

I'll think about it.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
