Yeah, so now in April he is going to go to the forest preserve near me and look for alates :rofl2:! I am going to have to see if he actually catches anything lol

Train and obtain!

You've got it down! Yeah, my dad got out his old fishing net when we went to the forest preserve for a walk. I took two test tubes though, so I can't tell who's fault it was  :rofl2:

I wish my dad was that interested. If he does find something, he calls me over thiugh. He even found a Formiva aserva queen! He though it was a carpenter ant.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I’m old school, but my dad woulda smacked me upside the head if I’d brought ants into the home back in the day. He was a “high functioning,” but mean drunk.

52 is too warm. Try 42.

Camponotus can withstand very extreme temps. I've heard that northern Camponotus can survive in -20 degree weather.

Starting construction on the formicarium. I got the Tupperware containers, filled about half of a giant box for a little over 11 dollars. Now I'm starting work on the hydration system. I am thinking of getting some PVA sponges, blocking off a little area, poking some holes in the nest area and covering the holes on the inside with fine mesh. I will send pics of the hydration system once I get it passed the rough draft stage.

I am debating to make a formicariums like one of Crystal's picture frame formicariums, or make it like one of Ant_Dudes, except slightly modified. My question, is what would work better for Camponotous?

Crystal's seem to work fairly well, though I have some problems with hydration when trying to copy her's.

Thanks, all I have to get are a PVA sponge, some grout, some lunch box inserts, and some fine mesh, and the I can star making it. I have a surplus of tipper wear containers for next year so I'm prepared :D

Update guys! I couldn't find inserts for my container and couldn't find a pre-made container at home which kind of sucks :(. Looks like I'll be asking for a Mini-Hearyh for Christmas this year...

Hello all Camponotus keepers! I will be starting the journal up again, with the first queen out of diapause being the founding queen! She was already doing laps around her test tube two minutes after I took her out to give her a checkup. Queen Selene is quite active sometime lol

I will update the journal in a month or so when I check on her after feeding her. She's laid eggs, but doesn't appear to have any at the moment (fingers crossed she's fertile)

Hello all! my founding queen slurped up her honey and hollowed out a mealworm, so things are defiantly looking up! Now I have to leave her alone for about a month, and I'll check on her when I take the larger colony out (at the end of this month). Hopefully she will have larvae next time I check her! Fingers crossed.
