I'm a little confused. Why are you waiting until October ends if they moved while you showered?

His OLD colony moved during a shower. His current one is being stubborn.

This is very confusing I get it. But so are ants lol.

Update, they have moved AWAY from the new test tube. Going to start tapping in the glass gently a little once every hour. As for the other test tube I may put some sugar water on parchment paper. Since I am kind of on the clock with this I am not going to do anything drastic until the the end of next week, though I hope I won't have to.

NEWSFLASH: A Nanitic squeezed herself through a 2 millimeter gap (somehow) so I had to do an emergency move. Luckily no deaths and the still haven't moved into the water test tube. Smh

Why does nothing interesting happen when I'm around? My ant colony moved into the new test tube except for a scout who is digging under the test tube? Well, the world may never know about that one, but I know that I will be hibernating them by the end of this week! See you all next season!

Ants always do the opposite of what you want them to, except for Tetramorium.
Good luck with diapause.

Sorry about the update, but the ants let me get a quick peek at their brood (thank you Selene) and their brood is insane! It looks like they have 17 larvae and I can't tell if one is pupating because it's under all the other larvae. All the ants also seem to be spread out and not clumped up like in their old test tube. I'm glad I changed test tubes because the honey water cotton was as hard as a rock! Anyways, just a brood report and other tiny observations.

Yeah, mom just hoping my wine cooler can get hot enough so I can gradually cool them down to 50 degrees. So far the hottest it goes to is 48 :(

I put them in the fridge. They are at 61 degrees, and I will cool them off a little a week. Also I found a second queen this week so I put her in a test tube and hibernated her as well. Idk if she's fertile, but she shed her wings before I got her.

I don't think 48 degrees will hurt them...

Also what species is the new queen?

I live in roughly the same part of Illinois as you do. I've always put all of my ants in the fridge for diapause. I've been keeping since the days of when Antscanada was actually in Canada  . The only ants that tend to experience death is the myrmecinae species. T. immigrans for example. I think that myrmecinae species tend to be less cold-resistant overall. But even then, I can't be certain it was because of the 40F conditions of my fridge. It's not uncommon for ants to die during diapause, regardless of species.

Currently Keeping:
Trachymyrmex septentrionalis

Pheidole pilifera

Forelius sp. (Monogynous, bicolored) "Midwestern Forelius"
Crematogaster cerasi

Pheidole bicarinata

Aphaenogaster rudis

Camponotus chromaiodes

Formica sp. (microgena species)

Nylanderia cf. arenivega

Looks to be Camponotous Pennsylvanicus. She's a little over an inch, about an inch and a half. I will post pics later, also thanks for the info about diapause! I caught her August 13th (4 months after my birthday. Coincidence? I think NOT).

Was she inside a log or walking on the ground? If the latter, she was probably an excess alate from earlier in the year. If this is the case, she is unmated and won't lay eggs.

Currently keeping:

Tetramorium immigrans, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis

Myrmica punctiventris, Formica subsericea

Formica pallidefulva, Aphaeogaster cf. rudis

Camponotus pennsylvanicus

Camponotus nearcticus

Crematogaster cerasi

Temnothorax ambiguus

Prenolepis imparis

she was walking on some pavement, no workers escorting her, she most likely is an excess alate, but I found a male alate a couple of days before. So maybe a mini-nuptial flight?

Me and my dad are always looking for alates, so when he saw a winged ant that looked somewhat like a queen, he called me and it took all of two seconds to identify it as a male. That day i taught him how to identify different ants
