I'm old enough to remember when a very well-regarded "P. Occidentalis [sic] Specialist" wrote that if you spend that much, there is a "nearly 100% success rate."

I heard that when you spend that much, there is a "nearly 100% success rate."

Not 100% though

like 1 % of antkeepers get real sad when their 100 dollar pog. colony dies

Expectation: ants will show visible signs of sickness before they die

Reality: oh, a completely healthy ant colony with lots of brood? it'd be a shame if they... suddenly died

Expectation: ants will work tirelessly to care for and protect the brood

reality: I'm just gonna leave this here and forget about it, maybe feed it once in a while

Expectation: queens that don't have wings have successfully mated and vice versa

Reality: queens are weird creatures and like to confuse antkeepers

Expectation: Lasius and Formica have "unmissable" flights. (In the words of Mikey)

Reality: I missed every single Formica flight and only caught one neoniger queen this year.

(I say caught, but she was in a pool)

I believe it's probably the climate. It seems they are more common in Canada's prairie provinces and the upper midwest. Here the two genera are absolutely everywhere, and rule the environment with an iron fist. I would estimate that for every residential property, there are at least two colonies of Formica and five of Lasius. Although these estimates are the bare minimum, and many properties have as high Lasius colony density as a colony every ten square feet or higher. As far as dealate queens go, I find at least one Formica, and Lasius DO have unmissable flights, with thousands or even millions of queens flying in every direction imaginable.
