My mom doesn't understand how ants work. She keeps telling me to use the stuff I bought (materials for formicarium) She keeps complaining that I didn't use them yet. They haven't laid their eggs yet!

She hasn't laid eggs yet? Oh this story just keeps getting better and better

How much have you been checking on them? Where did you put them?

Is it quiet near the table? How much light gets in? How much have you been checking on them?

The maximum amount of times you should be checking on them is once a week

feeding them is very quick and easy you know. Just mix some sugar and water together and put a tiny drop in the test tube. My ants love it!

It's hiding somewhere. It hasn't lived in that test tube for long so it probably hid in the soil

Put a bottle cap out, leave the tube in, put sugar water or honey in the bottle cap, get another bottle cap, put insects in the bottle cap, moisten the soil periodically, leave the tube in. The tube is for water, and the dirt just became her new home.

Yes they do.

Yes, they need oxygen. If you are worried about test tubes plugged with cotton suffocating your ants, it shouldn't be much of a problem. As long as your cotton isn't too tight, there should be some airflow. I'd you are referring to closing a lid of a container, luckily ants are small and don't need as much oxygen and might be fine for some time. Not sure how long, but I would suggest mesh on the lid. I made two big assumptions so sorry if you were just looking for a yes or no answer.
