Today, the queen that I had been unable to ID was found dead in her test tube. I put her under my microscope and opened up the Acanthomyops-group Lasius key on antwiki. I am 95% sure that this queen is Lasius bureni, the Wisconsin native found only in Comstock, WI in 1968.

I found her in Pewaukee during the flights in September. She was an alate on the pavement.

Here's some close-ups of the queen. I believe the setae on the clypeus/face area matches, as will as the hair on the dorsal of the head and the gaster and mesosoma. My queen also died in the same position the antwiki specimen is - wings spread out. This might be a habit throughout the species for some odd reason. If anyone notices anything about the queen, feel free to post them.

Awesome! So that is endemic to Wisconsin? How cool.

If it is actually lasius bureni I would send it to a university or lab. The myrmecologists could probably use another fresh specimen.

I could. Maybe I could get them to image a few of my specimens. I'll have to figure out who to contact over there.

I actually do know a guy. Should I email him to ask how you might get in touch?

Do you have the specimen point mounted yet? I also need to know if you would be able to get to Madison.

No, I don't trust myself with mounting it, though I can preserve it in alcohol if necessary.

I'd likely be able to get to Madison sometime soon.
