I've seen these in my backyard for a while and have been wondering what they actually are. Black one is about 2mm and red one is about 2.5mm. They both forage during the day. The black ones form substantial trails while the red ones are more solitary foragers. Thanks for any ideas!

looks like cardiocondyla, which has ergatoid males that fight to the death, and tapinoma sessile.


cardiocondyla is likely mauritanica

Hard to tell what the red one is, but I think Leptothorax or Cardiocondyla would be reasonable guesses. The black ones are most likely Brachymyrmex patagonicus.

cardiocondyla, not leptothorax. looks exactly like the ones here.
