Recently I moved my Tetramorium Immigran into a tubs and tubes setup and I was wondering since I don’t have any fluon right now what alternatives could I use that provide the same effect? Some very fine particles of sand gathered on the sides of the container and it seems they are having difficulty climbing on it so I assume they aren’t very good climbers.

My Lasius Neoniger colony is almost ready to be moved into a tubs and tubes setup and are very adventurous so I am more worried about them escaping than the Tetramorium.

I have heard of people using a mixture of things such as baby powder, vaseline etc I have also seen people just use a layer of plain baby powder and that worked fine for them. What combination has worked best for you? Thanks!
Lasius Neoniger (Around 23ish workers)

Tetramorium Immigran (8 Workers)

Myrmica Queen (Not 100% on species)

Formica Subsericea (No workers)

I haven’t needed to use anything yet but I hear olive oil works good for some too. Especially when applied to an upside down surface.
There’s an excellent post on hear somewhere listening species and what is successful from keepers.
Keeper of:
Camponotus Pennsylvanicus

Temnothorax ambiguus/curvispinosus (Acorn ants)

Lasius Interjectus (Larger citronella ant) with host workers: L. Americanus

That would be me.  :D And yes, baby powder should be effective against both of those genera. Yet I have found that humidity weakens the barrier quite quickly, and you might have to replenish it every couple weeks for it to keep it's effectiveness.

Olive oil. Make sure the layer isn’t too thick though so if you put too much on go over it with a dry cotton ball but don’t completely wipe it off.

I wouldn't use olive oil. If possible just have a lid they can't get out of, or use baby powder. I've had ants drown in olive oil before.

Currently keeping:

Tetramorium immigrans, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis

Myrmica punctiventris, Formica subsericea

Formica pallidefulva, Aphaeogaster cf. rudis

Camponotus pennsylvanicus

Camponotus nearcticus

Crematogaster cerasi

Temnothorax ambiguus

Prenolepis imparis

U use baby powder mixed with isopropyl(rubbing alcohol). Most of my ants can easily climb my PtFe barrrier
