Half the world population: Fire ant = red so red ant = fire ant. Red ant = bad. Hmm? Its mostly brown? Now look here child, there's a speck of maroon right there so its a fire ant.

The Secret Villain of Disney's, The Lion King Leaked?

C9V9aL-XcAA6QfQ.jpg

We've been led to believe our whole lives that the villain of Disney's, The Lion King was Scar, forming an alliance with Spotted Hyenas that drove the native herbivores away, but is that really true? I present to you my theory... INVASIVE ATTA LEAFCUTTER ANTS!!! That's right! The real villains were under our noses this whole time! Due to selfish humans accidentally introducing Atta cf. cephalotes to areas of southern Africa, a whole chain reaction was set off, leading to plant life dying off, causing native species to form alliances with each other as herbivores moved on to seek out areas with more vegetation. Those damn leafcutter ants! *slowly and creepily turns head to all of the young, northern antkeepers wishing to irresponsibly keep large Attines*

I saw some meme like this somewhere on Twitter, and I would give rights to the idea, but I have no idea where it came from...

Do take into account that Atta major workers do tend to have reduced or lacking pronotal anterior spines, as if the case for these individuals. Given the lack of the classic golden hairs on the head of major Atta cephalotes, I would say that these are in fact Atta sexdens or a similar species. Preserved specimens are needed to confirm that ID, however, so at the moment, I'd say we should simply leave them at Atta sp.

I think we can agree Atta do not have feathery legs, short, pointy antennae, two segmented thoraxes, and a leg for each body segment.

Picture this- a Lasius neoniger colony has just been infiltrated by a parasitic queen. The workers come up and smell the new queen, thinking it's their own:
