Hi i just wanted some advice of some of you ant experts. I am from the uk based on the east coast. I just wanted to know is it common to see ants in winter? I read a superstition once that said to see an7 ant in winter means death and this really worrying me because on March 5th i saw a handful of ants outside my house i have to admit it was pretty mild and the sun was warm for the time of year. Am i worrying silly over nothing or have others seen ants in early march.

Thanks for reading

That superstition is just that, superstition.  :D

Kind of like step on a spider and it will rain.

If it is warm enough out, the ants will come out to warm up.

Most of the UK sees their ants before I see them in northern Canada.  I usually start seeing the first daring ant or two in late April.  Although it is too cold to plant flowers until mid-May or early June in my location.

I saw the first one this year in late february, it was a Myrmica. One warmer days you can also see Formica s str outside their hills, warming up.
