I'm thinking of getting some pogonomyrmex occidentalis as they are also being sold in canada and I'm wondering if vertical formicariums like the mini hearth would be safe for them as they arent good climbers. I know tar heel ants is selling them with mini hearths but I'm still wondering if this is a good idea or not.

Tarheelants sells them with a mini hearth as an option.

Get the mini-hearth with the horizontally attached foraging area, so they don’t have to climb anything.

I made sure to do just that when I ordered mine. As a side note, Tetramorium are also completely incapable of living in a vertical Mini-Hearth, which I learned the hard way.
Currently keeping:
Tetramorium immigrans, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis
Myrmica punctiventris, Formica subsericea
Formica pallidefulva, Aphaeogaster cf. rudis
Camponotus pennsylvanicus
Camponotus nearcticus
Crematogaster cerasi
Temnothorax ambiguus
Prenolepis imparis

I only have a vertical one. Shouldn’t they be able to cling it?

I’ve raised massive colonies in vertical mini-hearths. They can climb, but they suck at climbing Fluon, which makes them perfect ants to keep.

Really? Maybe they just prefer not to climb vinyl tubing then. I still prefer the horizontal Mini-Hearth, just so I never have to worry about ants not going to the outworld.

Vertical is a bit more natural for most ants though.Really? Maybe they just prefer not to climb vinyl tubing then. I still prefer the horizontal Mini-Hearth, just so I never have to worry about ants not going to the outworld.

I already have a mini hearth but its vertical and I'm not getting my occidentalis fron tar heel, I'm getting them from a canadian supplier.Get the mini-hearth with the horizontally attached foraging area, so they don’t have to climb anything.

There is an Ant Keeper from this forum forgot the name ( he drive a car and wear glass , that is picture profile) sugested for the vertical mini hearth u can put some glue on the vinyl and add some sand substract it help her to reach the outworld.
also you can connect the test tube to the mini hearth from the side so she can take a stroll.
do they also sell seeds for the Pogonomyrmex ?
I may try to start a another Pogonomyrmex, this time i bypass the mini hearth and put her into a dual test tube with outworld (it look like a 2 gun turret )
1 side with the original test tube (no stress) and the other one maybe empty and full of seeds nygers etc... and sand in the outworld.

I have p. Californicus and they suck at climbing. They are great in my vertical sand formicarium but elsewhere they struggle. You can glue or grout sand onto walls and they can climb that easier.

Can't the vinyl tube just be removed?

You could put a stick down the hole so they could climb up. The stick would have to be thin though.
