Within the first five minutes of arriving at our campsite(in the eastern sierras), I caught two of these queens. One is a bit smaller than the other, but they are cooperating well, and are tending the egg pile of 8 eggs. Like all Temnothorax, their eggs are rather big compared to the size of the queen. :D I don't think there is much documentation on this species other than habitat, so maybe I will learn something new about colony size. Hopefully they turn out to be a successful colony.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

So, they have laid a couple eggs which are a lot smaller than the others. I am not sure if it is the smaller queen who is laying them, but it is a little odd. Here is a pic:

They have a very small larva now!!!  Yay! :yahoo:  I can't wait to see what workers look like!

The queens do look to be of slightly different proportions. It would be fascinating if two species were cooperating so well together.

I am pretty sure they are the same species. They would kill each other if they were different. But I guess its possible.

There are three pupae now. One is darkening. They also have a couple large larvae, and one is huge. A bit bigger than a pupa.

I am pretty sure they are the same species. They would kill each other if they were different. But I guess its possible.

I meant it would be fascinating because most species usually will fight, and it would be a new scientific discovery.

Ah okay. Also, the bigger queen did bite the other queen this morning, but I shook the tube, and they are peaceful again.

Little queen was brutally murdered. Legs torn off and dead. Worker should eclose within a few days. It is a light brown now.

I don't know. They sure seemed to get along in the beginining. Also, now, on side of her abdomen is torn off, so I wonder, if that dent she already had caused a rupture.

Second worker eclosed it is a much lighter color at eclosing than the other one. Still havelots of brood. When all their larvae pupate and eclose I will put them in hibernation.

Second worker is a beautiful orange color, like a worker I saw on a tree. Third worker eclosed, looking like the second one. Maybe the first worker was from the smaller, dead queen?
