My first ever self-made formicarium. Cork and glass, designed for wood nesting sp. built in. magnification.

I think I want to do something similar in wood.

What a cool idea! But won’t they chew out of it?

I'm thinking of just putting it in the outworld, which is a glass box. But I also might remake it in wood so it won't be so easy to destroy.

Alterny I could build a box for it... but if I do that why not use the box?

That would work perfectly in that case.

Another bit of experimentation.  This drawer is made to hold 4 20mm x 150mm test tubes with queens.  I haven't made the case yet but I'm going back and forth between a 4 high design or a single unit that's stackable.

I WAS WRONG.

OMG I hate wood so much! It's the most impossible material. My saw became dull over this one small project. My hands hurt from carving and using the drill. I don't have any power tools and I ran out of energy. IDK Maybe I should complete this. The ants can use it as it is. But it's so ugly I don't think I can bear to look at it.

Connecting those chambers with a whittling knife was... it was a struggle.

Oh no, maybe you could try a Dremel and use wood planks stacked upon each other?

That might make more sense. But the good things about carving it is it took the detail of the internal tunnels well. I don't own a dremel. I have a manual drill a saw and whittling knives. I guess a dremel might save some time. Hopefully the ants can wait until I'm cool headed enough to try again.

I was able to do one more cut then I hooked it up to the outworld where they have been living out of their test tube. They moved in in about 4 hours! I think they like it.

Camponotus really do like their wood. Perhaps it's the way it retains heat. The test tube was more moist, I'm leaving their water source near the entrance. I bought this colony and they did not arrive with brood.

I think it depends on the type of wood?some types of wood are easier to carve.
