Looks great Antdrew! Who's the lucky colony moving in?

Not sure, actually. Maybe my Formica or perhaps a new Crematogaster colony?

I spent the weekend working on this 5"x5" inch nest made out of Hobby Lobby Perfect Cast. It has a 47cc water tower that allows lighting from below like THA's designs. I'm not crazy about the rounded shape of the mold because I couldn't find glass that fit well.

Original chambers:

Sand coated with glass and frame glued on with silicone:

Bottom of the water tower exposed for lighting purposes:

How do you coat the chamber with sand? Do you use epoxy?
This time I used clear epoxy. I’ve also painted on a thin layer of plaster in the chambers and packed them with sand. I think I prefer the plaster method.

I usually use the plaster method as well. Here is one of my prototype nests coated with what I call "sand plaster". It's currently housing a formica species, it was one of my first attempts at a formicarium with a water tower.

I got bored and made a 3-d printed nest off a file from thing verse. I decided to try and use plaster for some chambers and coated some with sand. So the ants can chose between bare PLA material, plaster or sand. I'm probably going to use it for Tetramorium or something similar.

Looks very nice. Just make sure the glass is very secure. Tetramorium are masters of slipping under glass.

A species with cocoons would probably place larvae on the sand.

FC member, Boog, has inspired me to up my outworld game in 2021. I spent the weekend making these wacky outworlds using BoxBox containers, Hobby Lobby Perfect Cast, fake green sand, and "floating" shelves. I used some plastic toy rocks from my kids to cast the "floating" shelves. The green sand idea came to me as I was just waking up pre-dawn one morning.

Happy to hear I inspired your build and hope to see an outworld update in a future journal! I love the green touch and the flat areas give room for feeder placement and decorations if you wanted.

What are the dimensions of it? Seems to look good for Medium sized ants and maybe larger like Camponotus. Also, I think you could make a cool matching outworld in the same style of it. Anyways, I say it looks great, the large water tower, the good mix of more open open and smaller areas of the nest, the multiple entrances, I think that looks like a solid and well made formicarium!

It is 6 x 5 x 2 inches with a tight fitting lid.

Here are some more angles:
