Around two month ago I received a nest from a german YouTuber "Insektenprofi" as a gift. He made it out of concrete and he created a video tutorial too (however only in German):

A few days ago, I placed it into the outworld of my Camponotus nicobarensis colony and wanted to see if they'd move in. It didn't take long until they moved into their new spacious home:

Since concrete won't store water like plaster of paris or ytong "Insektenprofi" drilled a tiny hole through which he put a cannula. On the other end, I can connect a syringe with water and moisturize one part of the upper tunnel:

But I did only test it once and didn't put water in the nest again. As I already said in another thread, all Camponotus I've kept so far did well without a moist nest and so does the Camponotus nicobarensis colony. They store larvae, eggs and pupae in the dry tunnels:

Aren't these ants beautiful?

Since the nest is made out of concrete it'll be impossible to destroy it so I could easily place it outside the outworld and connect it with a tube. At least until they figure out how to enhance their mandibles with adamantium...

It's finally finished! Credits to Drew for cutting the block of ytong for me and letting me steal his automatic hydration method. (y)

I really really like this design.

Got this off of eBay, the pheidole I'm keeping moved right in. It turned out the colony was much smaller that I thought it was so it's kinda big for them.

Looks like an out-world with two nesting chambers? How are you ventilating it without them escaping? How do you water it?  I have been working on something similar so I am intrigued! Please share!

There are 2 nesting chambers with an outworld. the middle you can see the 2 pieces of vinyl tubing that is glued to the bottom and sticks out the cover.. those have little holes in them with a piece of cotton at the bottom so that the water wicks into the surrounding grout. the covers are ventilated with little holes. i used a heated sewing needle to make them.. i gave it a trial run and hydrating does leave a little condensation on the cups for the first few hours but as it spreads into the grout and the temp evens out it goes away.
