Found this cool looking worker ant in my garden today. I've never seen this species before in the yard.

1. Location: Alexandria, VA

2. Date 8-2-2019

3. Foraging on milkweed in a native plant garden

4. Length: 4mm

5. Reddish hue with lighter bands on the gaster

6. Distinguishing characteristics: Fast moving, looks like a very small Camponotus

7. Distingushing behavior: foraging on milkweed; very fast moving

8. Could not find nest

Kinda looks like a Camponotus subbarbatus minor. I can't really tell cus of the lighting but that's my guess.

I swear I was thinking the same thing! I usually try to guess but keep it to myself to see if I'm right. LOL! In this case even if I'm wrong at least I wasn't the only one LOL!

I always guess no matter how stupid it makes me look. The way I see it is that as long as I let the person know I have no idea what I'm talking about then no harm done.

That’s what I was thinking, too. Didn’t know I had those in my yard!
Thanks everyone.

Camponotus subbarbatus are weird. There are tons of colonies around my area, but I've never seen a queen during nuptial flights. I'm way more likely to find Camponotus discolor or nearcticus, even though they are far less common. Nuptial flights are done for this species, but if you catch one next year you'll be lucky.

I doubt I ever will. Only the kids on here find queens like that.

Same! I teach 8th grade, so I am ostensibly an adult in middle school.
