[Ender Ants]

Capture Date: July 25, 2019

Red-orange head, thorax, and abdomen 

Yellow lines on abdomen 

4-5 mm

Deciding to make some more ant keeping journals this year to document almost everything about my newly caught queens. First and foremost, I caught this queen a night after a rainstorm, along with a number of other species I haven't seen in a while. I'm also 90% sure she is P. gilvesceens because there were at least 10 colonies of this species around the area I had caught her, but there is always a chance she could be a different species.

Since this was the only Pheidole queen I had caught, I was hoping she will lay eggs. And to my luck she laid her first batch.

Gorgeous colors.

Caught 4 more Pheidole queens, with 2 being very similar to this one. Not sure what it could be, but my guesses would be P. hyatti, paiute, or creightoni. 

 

Length: 6-7mm

Coloration: Dark orange head, and thorax. Yellow abdomen, with brown lines on the top. 

Features: Dark mark on top of thorax, broader jaws compared to P. gilvescens

Thank you, and yes. That was one of the last photos I took before that colony had died out.

Update August 17, 2019:

Pheidole gilvescens queen died due to somehow drowning in the water.  One of the Pheidole dealates had died too for some reason, and an alate.

 

I have two more queens both with a small clutch of about 10 eggs. This is one of the dealates. Not even sure if I have caught 2, or 3 different Pheidole species the past 2 months.
