So in getting back into the hobby, I figured I'd start with my favourite ants, Crematogasters! Something about their cute waggling heart shaped butts just makes them absolutely adorable in my books. I purchased this colony from an old friend who welcomed me back to the hobby with a couple other gifts too! They were about 15 ants total. I fed them a bit of maple syrup however they weren't so keen on that. When I tried back with a smushy fly that was caught in the house, they were ALL OVER THAT. I've always found that Crematogasters tend to be protein heavy ants in my experience.

Here they are dragging that poor smushed fly through the test tube.

Congrats on the new colony! I have a small Crematogaster colony as well and I also find they seem to be very protein heavy! At first they didn't seem to be doing too well, they were a captured small colony, found while clearing an area at work under a rock, they were actually down to like 11 workers at one time but I started putting bits of insects in like everyday and they are now strong at probably over 100. :D

Look forward to seeing your colony progress! :D

Excellent! Another Crematogaster journal, and yes these are hands down my favorite ants! I look forward to following this colony's progress. I raised up three queens I found last September that I dubbed the Divas. I've sold two of them and still have the most productive one. She is now pushing several hundred workers. I absolutely love everything about these ants other than their awe inspiring ability to escape.

My Colony is so large that the average escape consists of more ants than your colony currently has. That is the point when every time you walk by your freezer you're tempted to throw them in and "forget" about them   ;)

The girls are happy drinking some Aunt Jemima butter syrup. Overall they seem pretty happy.
