So in northern Wisconsin, near the border with Michigan and Minnesota, I have found strange carpenter ants. They are mostly black, with golden gaster hair, but the legs, along with parts of the thorax, are red. I'm not sure if they are Camponotus herculeanus, or if they might be C. chromaiodes. Speaking of C. herculeanus, I am quite surprised that it is still considered to be present in both Europe and America, considering that a multitude of previously cosmopolitan ant species have since been split. Is there a reason for this, or has the scientific community just not gotten around to reviewing the species yet?

Currently keeping:

Tetramorium immigrans, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis

Myrmica punctiventris, Formica subsericea

Formica pallidefulva, Aphaeogaster cf. rudis

Camponotus pennsylvanicus

Camponotus nearcticus

Crematogaster cerasi

Temnothorax ambiguus

Prenolepis imparis

You probably have Camponotus chromaiodes.
