I caught this queen today at 2:00, and quickly tubed her and provided honey. I used honey because it does not go bad, and this species loves it. Hopefully, this attempt will be successful unlike my many other attempts at this species. She is heated, so that might make a difference.
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

So, I did some research on the genus, and most colonies are founded by budding. If, however, she does manage to start a colony, it will make history, as no laboratories have founded them with a single queen. I will give her protein in a few days.

Okay, but I think this queen is dying, as she is not really moving, so I will do what you said, but also add some wild workers.

SUPER polygynous

Yep, no signs of aggression from a completely foreign worker and I added a springtail, like you said. I think she is infertile though, as she has laid two eggs, in completely different places, and she does not take care of them. When she dies, however, I will not discontinue the journal, as I find these queens year-round.

Well, so much for no signs of aggression, the Queen killed the worker. On the plus side, she is eating the springtail, and does look better.

maybe adding a larvae will make her motherly instincts kick in.
#11 Offline - Posted May 20 2019 - 2:58 PM
I would, but all the nests I know of are in cracks in the concrete, so it would be hard for me to aquire larvae.

This queen did not really matter to me, as I find these all year, so I will find more.

I currently have five queens. Two are with a worker in a petri dish setup, and the other three, found as freshyly flown alates are in a dirt setup. Dirt setup queens looks most promising.

Maybe later. Hard to do in dirt setup. And queen in petri dish sadly died.

Bad news. Petri dish ants diapeared, and one in dirt setup was simehow squased in lid. Tommorow, I will try to get some decent pictures.

Three queens in dirt setup, one wingless queen was added. And, I saw a queen carrying an egg! They are very hard to see, so they could have more developed brood as well. Pics are pretty much impossible. I really hope this will result in a successful colony, as they are really active foragers.
