I agree, almost certainly illegal.
I am aware of the specific criteria, I still just do not believe there was ever any real intention to add additional species of ant to the list. Tapinoma sessile would be a problematic addition as it is almost certainly several species all pretending to be one.
I know but how can you export an ant species if it is not allowed to be shipped accross state borders?
I dunno, airport in the same state? My guess is that most american ants you can buy in Europe are illegal imports anyway.
I wouldn't hold my breath for any additions. This was just their way of saying "hey we looked into it".
The species have to hit very specific critera, a large (prefferably nation-wide) coverage is one of them.
Camponotus pennsylvanicus and Tapinoma sessile are hot candidates, not sure if any other ants have been discussed so far.
Tapinoma sessile species complex status is up in the air, but give it a while for an answer to possibly emerge.....
