Hey Guys! Sorry been away for a bit life got busy but hopefully it's slowin' down a bit now. I traveled out to Kansas last week and spotted a few Colonies of these guys!

 

1. Location (on a map) of collection: Lakin, Kansas
2. Date of collection: 7/6/19
3. Habitat of collection: Farmland, near a barn
4. Length (from head to gaster):
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Mostly brown
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Big Heads
7. Distinguishing behavior:
8. Nest description: Very active during the day

9. Nuptial flight time and date: N/A

Welcome back, Acutus! I was wondering where you had gone.

 

This is a Pogonomyrmex species (also known as harvester ants), possibly Pogonomyrmex apache. In the wild, these guys can survive a long time off of seeds they collect and store.

Looks like Pogonomyrmex, especially with large head and their particular coloration. Good luck on a species, because I'm lazy. Zeiss/ABC have too much stamina. I'm going to sleep; good video though

Do you remember how rough the exoskeleton on these ants were?  If they were rough (had deep grooves), I would say Pogonomyrmex rugosus and if they were a bit smoother (lesser grooves), I would say Pogonomyrmex apache.

I agree with the Pogonomyrmex apache assessment but a closer look would be needed to be 100% sure.

I took some pics too! I'll look through them and see if maybe they'll show something you guys can see. It was really cool watching them work though they were bringing in all kinds of stuff! I wish I had been around during a flight time! Of course that would be illegal.
