According to AntMaps, the species is present in South Dakota, although I don't believe it is common anywhere within its range.

I'd try to find them, but as I said, they're uncommon, like most fascinating species......

I guess I just don't have the time to drive for hours in the middle of nowhere looking for a few stray queens, no matter how cool the species.

Now if it were looking for Acroymyrmex in the California desert, that would be a different story.

They're leafcutter ants. Oecothylla and Polyrachis are native to southeast Asia and Australia.

I've always assumed queens don't stress as easily in larger numbers. But pleometrophic ones sure stress over each other, though.

I think the queen really likes the sand set up, the brood count is booming! I'm not sure why they like to stack most of brood on the surface but I don't mind since i get to see them more often. They're on the side with the heat cable so it can't be heat, maybe its too moist? I'm just a little worried they won't be able to drink any water if I let it dry out a bit. I would leave some open water for them but they just cover it with sand immediately.
