Formica bradleyi

I was going to wait  until these got workers but I'm just too excited. I got two of these from Canadian anter earlier this week. Both queens have eggs and  drank a little bit of honey. I'm really hoping these queens do well since they're the most beautiful queens I've ever seen. Wish me luck!

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Formica bradleyi

So these guys went from eggs to pupae in a week, and I'm pretty sure they were caught a week before that. This is some insanely fast growth for a species up here in Canada. I don't even have them on a heating cable.

 

It's also interesting to note that although this species nests exclusively in sand, it doesn't seem necessary.

I have some good news and some bad news for this update. The bad news is that one of the queens died for what's seems to be no reason whatsoever (as queens seem to do). The good news is that the other healthy colony now has six workers! I gave them some honey and a few fruit flies. Talk about some crazy fast growth.

I've actually noticed many of my ants trying to get as far away as possible from the heating cable on hot days. If temps are above 30C I remove them from the cable (except for my Pogonomyrmex queen).

I took out my heating pads about a month ago as the ants did not seem to care and did not distinguish between the heated and unheated sides. But I'll probably be turning them on again soon.

These guys are doing great, after the last pupa ecloses they will be ready for hibernation. Only thing is their current tube is running dry so I will have to move them.

That callow worker is real cute.

I typically place my ants in hibernation around October (yes Canada is that cold), but since they have no brood other than that last pupa I might as well throw them in early
