I found four of these queens on 3-30-2018 at Chaney Trail in Altadena, California. At first we weren't sure what they were, as they didn't look like all-black C. vicinus, and certainly did not look like C. quercicola. After doing some reading, nurbs found them to possibly be C. maritimus. I put one of mine under the microscope, and all the features seemed to match.

I have two of them in test tubes, and two in two of my starter formicariums.

My 20+ colony's queen from last year died in hibernation, so will have to restart from scratch this year

is it common for ant to die when hibernate?

most ants don't die but some still do

I think one of these must have died, because I only seem to have three of them. They all have workers now too, with two having only one worker, and the third having four.

Drew you should label the containers they are in to not lose track of species.

Have one of these also. They are doing well. Noticed they like dark and dislike very high humidity. Before had vent hole in pencil box, they moved out into the valley of the empty test tube spots. Once I added a huge vent, moved back into test tube.

Um.. okay? Do you know why they died? If they died in hibernation, don’t even reply. Some ants die in hibernation. It’s okay. You will probably catch some more.

I honestly don't even remember. They're been gone for a while, I just forgot to update this journal. I sell some of my colonies, some are duds and I get rid of them, and some slowly die off.

Oh, I climbed a tree part way, only to find a potbellied cricket. Something our location has.... don’t ask
