One of the things I was having a hard time finding was a way to contain carpenter ants that wasn't fluon. According to what I read, they can walk across talcum powder, olive oil, vaseline, etc. They're just really good at climbing up stuff. But before I went and bought fluon, I had the idea of trying mineral oil. It's a lot less viscus than olive or other vegetable oils, so I did some testing with some wild carpenter ant workers and they could not make it up a vertical surface coated with a thin layer of mineral oil. I'm not sure if the brand/purity matters, but I had this stuff from Amazon. Just thought I would let people know.

Just spray some olive oil pan spray onto a paper towel, let any excess soak into the towel, then wipe around the rim of your outworld. Make sure that there isn't enough excess spray on your towl to cause it to run down the side of the formicarium.
