I was looking for a C. pennsylvanicus queen and found this queen instead. She had a pile of pupae that seemingly disappeared when I scooped her up. She has a worker but its abdomen was cut off during collection. She has a pile of eggs that could actually be small larvae.

She has a pupa too. I can brood boost her. There are lots of nearby colonies. I gave her some sugar water stuff.

I moved the test tube next to a heat mat used for my scorpion.

I gave her more sugar today. There are two or three eggs next to her that I think she just laid. So far, so good.

I am re-identifying this queen as Lasius americanus. The L. neoniger queen I found last year looked a lot different.

I think she ate her eggs. Couldn’t find them. I won’t check on her for a week.

How often were you checking on her beforehand? Once a week should actually be the normal amount.

I checked on her too much. Part of it is that I worried she would die because she had a worker, but now doesn’t. I am having to give her food because of this.

Ok guys. I flipped over a log and voila, a Lasius colony! There was tons of alate pupae, but more importantly, worker pupae. I only took 2 though. I just now added them to her tube. I am now naming this queen Ceres. It’s a Roman goddess that is about agriculture, fertility and motherly relationships. I though that was appropriate for an ant queen.

I checked up on her to see if she accepted the pupae. I then realized how stupid I am. She is NYLANDERIA!

Her abdomen is a bit flat and she can barely walk.
