Both look to be C. vicinus. They come in many different colors.

First one is definitely not C. modoc.

I am not saying that it is impossible that those sightings are wrong, and even said that those could be misidentifications, I could Definitely see how those sightings could be wrong, I am not disagreeing on this.  If Camponotus Herculeanus was in California it would be on the northern side. The Northern ant is a name and doesn't restrict it's boundries and if this ant exists in Oregon is it so far fetched that it has traveled to california over the years. I respect you as an ant keeper and know that you have probably been to a lot of places in California and seen a lot of ants, but there is a possibility of C. Herculeanus in Cali. I never said that queen was C. Herculeanus and don't think it is just because of the coloration.

edit: I never said there was C. Herculeanus in Cali, but i think there is a possibility

Herculeanus is a northern cold climate ant. You don't ever want to state some facts as absolutes, but practically speaking C. herculeanus does not exist in California. If those Antmap sightings in CA are incorrect (and they all are), what makes you think Oregon's information is correct? Stop believing everything you read on the Internet  :)

This isn't a debate, if Camponotus Herculeanus lives in Cali if it does then it does, if it doesn't then it doesn't. It's like saying RIFA doesn't exist in florida just because it's from south america, or because your backyard doesn't contain it or you can't find it. their is an extreme temperature difference between the arctic and California, and did you just question if C. Herculeanus was in Oregon? If so I live in southern Washington (Ridgefield to be exact) and find these by the heaps. Oregon isn't far away and has practically the same climate. My right below it says advanced member is a picture of a queen of that species (If the people who identified it were right, ). I never said they are in Cali, I'm saying there is a possibility. Because it is a widespread species across. Europe, Asia, Canada and most of the united states including the western side and the northern side. It's not that hard to understand, if you don't believe those sightings, then disprove them. Do you believe Camponotus Modoc, is in California, because that too is in Canada. Just because it lives in a cold place in some places doesn't mean it can't live in warm places. Us humans are a perfect example of this. Don't be ignorant and provide far fetched examples that helps no one out. This isn't a debate if you want to prove to me that C. Herculeanus doesn't live in California look at all those sightings, open every damn log in all of California and come back to me when you are down. This isn't a matter of if it is there, it is a matter of when an ant keeper finds a colony/ queen. And I know most of the ant keepers in Cali live in SoCal so you probably aren't going to have much luck. This isn't a debate if C. Herculeanus lives in Cali. If it does it does, and if it doesn't it doesn't.

True, this is whether or not you can trust antmaps or antweb as gospel when to comes to what occurs where and the simple fact is that you can not.

and there is no denying that, but my point is if you are going to tell me that something doesn't live somewhere, where a source says it does, then disprove the site.
