I find queens tend to land on shiney black surfaces a lot where I am.  Cars, trampolines....

They don't stay long, but if you are sitting next to it reading and keeping an eye on you can see quite a few if there is a flight.

I had a lot of water beetles and bugs landing the day I washed the trampoline...

My patio is a dull gray. It get SO hot in midday that you could fry a Formica queen there and eat it, but there still are ants living between the cracks. A lot of them.

Species I keep:

1 Lasius cf. Neoniger 30 workers

1 Camponotus sp. 15 workers

20 Tetramorium SpE 30 workers

1 T. Sessile 200 workers

I have a screen door in my backyard that queens seem to like maybe because the glass reflects light
