Amazing list. Extremely useful.

 

Wondering if Liometopum occidentale can be added to the list? Any info anyone can add would be great.

I just bought a "loaf" off ebay of ant food from someone in Rancho Cucamonga. I'll let everyone know how it works out once it gets here.

My Tetramorium colonies absolutely LOVE canned tuna (water packed). Inexpensive and it dehydrates easily to keep it fresh so you can make a 6 ounce can last a LONG time by just adding a few drops of water to small chunks when feeding.

It's not that bad. In most cases it'll dry out before it starts to smell badly.

probably attracts flies too. I'll never use meat again due to maggots.

Did anyone try Calcium Powder , I don't mean feeding the powder directly, what if it was mixed with honey water or feed to their prey firstly?

Actually, I've tried giving calcium powder to my Tetramorium. They didn't really have a use for it. Rather than dragging the whole calcium-dusted termite to the nest, they carried it into a corner and left it there. I cleaned it off and put it back in the nest (they ate it).

I can add to Messor barbarus: they ravage small grasshoppers and wasps. They dislike cicada.

 

I can add to Lasius niger: They like small grasshoppers. They dislike wasps, mosquitoes and cicada.

I find that Tetramorium queens prefer sugar water over honey. I had a queen in a colony that wouldn't eat at all until I put in a drop of sugar water. Then she sat there for a couple of hours until she had licked the whole area queen. Whenever a worker came by, she would wave her antennae and they would back off. Tetramorium also seems to prefer almost any sort of insect and Tapinoma sessile prefer fruit flies, and so does ponera and hypoponera.

I've found that Stigmatomma pallipes fundraises prefer Tetramorium brood and termites over geophilid centipedes.

The foods listed above are what my small colony (10 workers) will eat and won't eat at this point in the colony's development. I'll add/change things if I need to as things progress. I also thought it was important to add that the 'dislikes' are simply foods that I have not personally witnessed the ants eating. They may have eaten them while I wasn't watching.

My Messor cf. wasmanni likes specimens of the tribe: Phycitini.

Boiled egg whites are preferred over yolks.

Also, dry boiled egg whites are being consumed too.

To add to messor barbarus: They eat cooked cod.  They also immediately collected pieces of crushed pine nuts.  But they've shown no interest in a blob of peanut butter I gave them.

Initially my Camponotus consobrinus founding colony (7 nanitics/workers ) ate frozen bloodworms very readily but when offered mealworm pupae covered the bloodworms and were straight into the pupae.
In both colonies the Queens emerged and ate the pupae themselves, spending night and day in the open eating from the pupae halves which contain mostly liquid.
I'll point out that I haven't had them long and so far I've offered bloodworms and sugar water as staples, which were readily accepted, apple which was ignored and the mealworm pupae.
