Today here in my area of Tennessee there was a large Prenolepis imparis flight, with tens of thousands of queens and even more males. I ended the day with 47 queens, a few of which are a strange greyish color form. I watched all but 5-7 mate, so the vast majority have been fertilized.

Update: 3/22/21

Formica subsericea |

----------------------------

I found this small colony under some leaf litter at the base of a mature Oak tree last week. They've got two queens and 15-20 workers. They've laid eggs since capture, and probably are at 20. More updates will come in the near future!

Formica incerta |

-----------------------

The eggs have already turned into medium larvae, and the queen has laid a new batch of about 20 eggs. They've been eating small pieces of mealworms and fruit flies, with sugar water and apples slices. I expect them to get about 100 workers this year if all goes well, and I can't wait for that to happen.

Update: 3/27/21

Camponotus chromaiodes | colony #1

---------------------------------------------------

The colony has eclosed their first major worker of the year, decently sized at 10-12mm with a ~4.5mm wide head. The colony's brood pile has been growing insanely large, and it now spans (and nearly fills) their Discus, Fortress and homemade grout nest. Freya lays nearly round-clock, and there's always a huge pile of eggs in the nest. They've really started expanding into the Discus, with about 100-120 workers in there with several hundred eggs, larvae and pupae. The largest major pupa hasn't eclosed yet, but is darkening and should hatch any day now. I'm interested to see how big she'll really be!

Update: 4/1/21

Camponotus chromaiodes | Freya

----------------------------------------------

Well, this morning I found Freya dead in their grout nest. The workers she left behind still have hundreds of brood left, so I'll keep them til they stop producing workers. It was a good run, and I hope my next colony will do just as good!

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
